Senate GOP leader: No to tax dollars for campaigns

ALBANY -- A Democratic senator says he's against financing campaigns with tax dollars, delivering a blow to efforts to force a vote on the proposal.

Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. tells The Associated Press he doesn't support of public financing of campaigns and won't join the effort by fellow Democrats to bring a bill to the floor in the Senate.

Senate Republicans are opposed to spending what they estimate would be $200 million per election on a voluntary system to fund candidates' campaigns by matching donations 6-to-1.

Diaz says Tuesday that he opposes the current proposal, he's open to considering others.

Supporters of the measure say Diaz is the key to a rare attempt to force a bill to the floor if 32 members vote for it.
