NY Legislature votes to toughen pet 'lemon' law

ALBANY (AP) -- New York is trying to make it easier to return a bum pet in hopes of cracking down on puppy mills.

The legislature has voted to strengthen the "pet lemon law" which requires pet sellers to pay for treatment, reimburse the buyer, or provide a replacement if a pet was sold with a serious illness or defect.

The change will give pet owners six months to detect problems, rather than the current 14 days, and aims to put a bite into unscrupulous puppy mills.

Twenty other states have similar laws.

Assemblywoman Amy Paulin says the measure adopted last week aims to discourage pet shops and other retailers from buying from massive breeding operations that traffic in pets with serious health problems that show up only after a pet joins a family.
