Family of Albany boy killed by car push for traffic safety

ALBANY -- Family members of Qazir Sutherland, 7, spoke at Monday’s Common Council meeting to push for additional safety measures after the boy was killed crossing South Pearl Street.

Qazir’s aunt told police the boy saw the car coming, but was unable to get out of its path. He was taken off life support on Monday and died.

The family said they frequently see cars speeding near the 600-block of S. Pearl St. and would like the city to lower the speed limit and install speed bumps.

Police are investigating the accident and said so far the driver is not facing charges.
