Maple Avenue Middle School teacher attends national conference

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Rick Flemming is hitting the road Sunday, headed to the nations capital to learn better ways to teach our kids. The 8th grade social studies teacher is one of 26 in the nation to attend C-SPAN's 2013 Educators' Conference, proving he's the best candidate to bring this important knowledge here to schools in the Capital Region.

" I thought wow this would be really neat since i've taken up the role of running the tv studio at the school with the librarian," Flemming tells us.

He'll take what he learns back to his students in the fall, skills he says he plans to integrate immediately.

"They want to get educators to integrate their videos more into the classroom, and they also have a student cam competition a documentary competition that I really want my 8th graders to become involved with," he says.

"I also plan on sharing the information that I gain in this conference with other educators around the state," Flemming adds.

The two-day conference helps educators make social studies content come alive in the classroom, in an ever-changing world. Something Flemming says is vital in today's education.

"The world has changed in the past 20 years, and in 20 years from now it's going to be even more different. technology is a huge part of today. our STEM program with science technology engineering and math is an incredible part of what Saratoga schools are doing. and I like to think that i'm doing my part on the social studies end to support that."

Flemming competed with applicants from across the country to secure a place at the conference.
