SUNY board moves toward rare addition of college
ALBANY (AP) -- The State University of New York board of trustees has made a major move to create the first new college in 50 years, but only after several trustees warned the decision is based on corporate influence, a ginned-up report and an internal power struggle.
Just three of 18 trustees voted Tuesday against the resolution to separate the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering from the University at Albany beginning in the 2014-15 academic year.
But several trustees indicated closed-door debate showed a deep rift over the secretive move first reported by The Associated Press in March.
Some trustees say it's being forced by a power struggle between the University at Albany and the nanoscience center's founder. They also cited glaring errors in an internal report recommending the separation.
