7 arrested in bogus check bust

CBS6 Staff

GREEN ISLAND--More than a half dozen people are facing charges after a bogus check bust in Albany County.

Qhasson Lawton, 21, Devine Davis, 21, Sheila Stroud, 30, Carley McCanney, 36, Helen Maeweather, 45, Maraca Slater, 29, and Bernice Seymore, 29, are all being arrested on Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument.

The Albany County Sheriff's office was alerted to the scam by The Town of Green Island Justice Court when they realized that checks, duplicated from a check drawn on the court's bail account, were being cashed.

The checks were being manufactured in Brooklyn, NY and being transported to the capitol region by bus to be cashed at local banks.

Investigators say they made off with more than $11,000.

Two suspects, Barbara Whitehead and Aisha Stasack, remain at large.

Anyone with any information on their whereabouts are asked to call (518) 765-2352.
