9-year-old finds gun, shoots himself in hand
ALBANY -- 9-year-old
Anthony Chaney, Jr. went to play in a vacant lot next to his home in the
300-block of Orange St Saturday. It’s an area where children frequent, but
Saturday evening he found a loaded handgun and accidentally shot himself in the
“I’d just seen it lying and I just went in the back and a cat came by my leg and I pulled the trigger. I looked at my hand and it was bleeding and I came out,” said Anthony. “I thought it was a play toy so I thought I could play with it. I didn't know it was loaded.”
Anthony then ran to the front of the home to find his father, who called out for help.
“I went into shock for a couple seconds and I took my t-shirt off and wrapped his hand off and told someone to call 911,” said Anthony Chaney, Sr.
Anthony’s grandmother was also in the front of the home and fumbled with her phone as she tried to call for an ambulance.
"I was so nervous I couldn’t call 911, I was calling everybody in the front of my phone and they put him in the car and took him,” said Janet Wilburn.
Anthony was driven to Albany Medical Center while police were called, but before officers arrived the weapon went missing after Anthony dropped it in the lot.
“Our detectives are actively speaking with people in that neighborhood and are trying to determine what happened,” said Ofc. Steve Smith, spokesman for the Albany Police Department.
Investigators are still working to determine who may have owned the gun and why it was left there.
Anthony is expected to make a full recovery after his wound heals and he undergoes physical therapy, although he is planning a new career path.
“I said I was going to be a policeman, but I changed my mind about that,” said Anthony. “I ain't going to touch another gun in my life.”
