Wynantskill UFSD to hire consultants to review parent, teacher complaints

WYNANTSKILL -- The Wynantskill Union Free School District Board of Education unanimously voted to hire two consultants to review complaints from parents and teachers.

Last month 28 of the districts 29 teachers voted no-confidence in Superintendent Lisa Henkel. More than 300 parents signed a petition asking the board to fire her.

On Monday, the board called an emergency meeting to discuss a plan to hire two consultants. One will review the districts human resources procedures, and the other will look at special education.

During the meeting Wynantskill Teachers Association President Matt Lutz presented the board with a 63-page document containing complaints from teachers.

It's all about the students education. Theyre the ones that are being affected right now and I want to know in September the board has taken our allegations and thought about and now has a solution put in place in September, said Lutz.

Since the vote, the union and board have discussed the issues and worked to minimize the impact to the classroom if the consultants review is not completed before the school year begins.

The board has confidence that we will be able to open school and have it be a positive experience for the kids, said Board President Andrea Paone.

Henkel did not address parents, but said she is looking forward to the review of the district.

I'm deeply saddened and disappointed, but I welcome the work that the consultants will bring and I look forward to the results, said Henkel. I don't want to take the focus off the good that the district has going. Weve worked hard all year to implement all the new standards the state has.
