Police: Homeless man arrested on burglary charges

GLENMONT - A homeless man has been charged on burglary and other charges in Bethlehem and Colonie.

Police say 47-year-old James Hakkenberg robbed two homes during the last week of June while the homeowners were not home.  He was apprehended while attempting to burglarize a Colonie home back on June 21.

Bethlehem and Colonie detectives, in a joint investigation, recovered stolen property including a car, jewelry, and baseball cards.

An investigation revealed that Hakkenberg was knocking on doors to find out if anyone was home before breaking into the home.

Hakkenberg is charged with attempted burglary, criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief, and possession of a controlled substance in the Town of Colonie.

He is also charged with two counts of burglary, grand larceny and criminal mischief.

He is currently in the Albany County Jail without bail.

If you have had contact with Hakkenberg, Colonie or Bethlehem Police would like to hear from you.
