TRAFFIC ALERT: 787 construction between 9W and Route 5

ALBANY -- A $28.6 million reconstruction project on I-787 begins today.
A southern portion of 787 will be closed between Route 9W (McCarty Avenue) and Route 5 near Exit 3B (Madison Avenue)  to pave and rehab six bridges.

Starting July 1, two northbound lanes will be closed between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. On Tuesday, July 2 one northbound lane will be closed.

Similar work will occur the following week to establish a right lane closure on I-787 south.  Two lanes will be closed at night, while one lane will be closed during the day.  By mid-July, one lane will be closed in each direction through the fall.

The overall project will include repairing decks, replacing joints and bearings and making other miscellaneous concrete and steel repairs.  The six bridges carry I-787 over Route 32, over the Thruway westbound connection ramp, north and south over Route 5, and north and south over Route 32 and Broadway.  Route 5 runs along State Street in Albany, follows a portion of Broadway and then runs under I-787, connecting Quay Street on the east with Frontage Road and Broadway on the west of the highway.

As part of the project, highway signs, guiderail and pavement markings will be replaced.  New drainage structures will be installed.  Work is expected to be completed in 2016.
