Sen. Schumer to get firsthand look at flood damaged Fort Plain

FORT PLAIN - Senator Charles Schumer was in Fort Plain Wednesday touring flood damage and impacted homes along Abbott Street.

His visit to the area was a push for FEMA to approve the State's request for Montgomery County to be declared a disaster area.  This push will help deliver federal assistance to help homeowners and business owners rebuild as well as assistance for local governments to rebuild roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

Schumer was joined by the family of Ethel Healey.  Healey's home was washed away when flash floods moved into the area back on June 28.  The 87-year-old's body was found Monday afternoon near lock 14 in the town of Canajoharie in the Mohawk River.
