NY conservatives target break for abortion lobby
ALBANY (AP) -- Special treatment for an abortion rights group by New York's Democrat-dominated ethics and lobbying commission has drawn a challenge by a group opposed to abortion.
The conservative New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedom is asking for the same protection from having to identify its donors that the state Joint Commission on Public Ethics granted to NARAL Pro-Choice New York. NARAL was a leading supporter of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's women's rights agenda that included a protection for late-term abortions.
JCOPE is dominated by former Cuomo staffers and his appointees to the board, including the chairman.
Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos is demanding JCOPE extend its recent protection to NARAL, which is a well-financed political lobbying group that has opposed Republicans in campaigns.
JCOPE had no immediate comment.
