Double shooting in Schenectady

SCHENECTADY -- What was supposed to be a family celebration ends in tragedy. Shots were fired just before 10pm Friday night at 1633 Becker Street. Two brothers were wounded, one of them fatally.   "Officer's arrived on scene and found two victims both male with gunshot wounds, one was shot in the torso," Lt. Mark McCracken tells us.   Police are still investigating exactly what happened Friday night. but Saturday, friends and family gathered outside the home, hoping to bring peace to this neighborhood which police tell us has been a problem in the past.   "I mean there's certainly calls for service in that area, there was a homicide there a few years ago, where an individual was shot in the back of the head on becker street," McCracken says.   "To walk down the street to see shots fired, like I say kids can get hurt, mom can get hurt, anybody can get hurt," Schenectady resident Joseph Washington says.   Joseph Washington knew the family and both victims. 24 year old Jose Torres known as "Mikey" died from his injuries. His brother, identified as 31 year old Lois Gomez was treated for gunshot wounds to his upper back and shoulder. According to police the shooting took place in the backyard of the home, and several family members including children played whitness to this heinous act of violence.   "I don't even know what to say to these people. I'm so sorry, I know the guy that died. I don't know what it started over I just knew the guy who passed on, and this brother is right there who got shot in the neck."   Regardless of Fridays double shooting, police say crime in the city is down, yet this incident remains cause for concern. No suspect is in custody at this time, and police continue their investigation.
