Local terror expert discusses DC Navy Yard shooting
ALBANY -- A local
terrorism expert said investigators will have a daunting task putting together
all the pieces that led to Aaron Alexis to enter the Washington Navy Yard and begin shooting.
Alexis is accused of killing 12 people and wounding eight others.
You try to figure out how he got in and why he did it, said Rick Mathews, Director of the National Center for Security and Preparedness. To make this kind of attack takes someone who is very stupid or very motivated.
Alexis is a native of Brooklyn who later joined the Navy as a Texas-based reservist in 2007. He was discharged in 2011 following a shooting incident.
Late Monday night, the FBI was working on interviewing thousands of witnesses to determine if he gave any clues during the incident.
If you're a home-grown person that means you become disenchanted with your home country or more enchanted with someone else, said Mathews In this case we're not sure what motivated this individual or individuals to do this, but clearly the outcome was very tragic.
