SARATOGA SPRINGS - A Saratoga Springs man, while in jail on drug charges, now faces up to 7 years on assault charges.

Officers say while on work detail in the kitchen, 32-year-old Royal Hamilton, "sucker punched" another inmate, then violently struck him in the back of the head back in October 2012.

The injured inmate suffered a fractured nose, bruising and lacerations requiring 14 sutures.

Hamilton was found guilty of assault after the jury deliberated for 10 hours.

He was already in jail pending indictment of criminal possession and drug charges.  He faces 15 years on the drug charges and up to 7 years for assault.
