Buffalo bus driver rescues woman from overpass

BUFFALO  (AP) -- The driver of a public transportation bus is being hailed as a hero for preventing a woman from jumping off a bridge over a Buffalo highway.

Local media outlets report that Darnell Barton had just picked up 20 high school students on the afternoon of Oct. 18 when he spotted a woman standing along the railing on an overpass and leaning over the traffic below.

Barton pulled over and asked the woman in her 20s if she needed help. When he stepped off the bus, the woman looked back at the traffic. Barton says that's when he got an arm around her and pulled her to safety.

Barton sat with her on the sidewalk until help arrived.

When Barton got back on the bus to continue his route, the students applauded him.
