Stephentown man charged with animal neglect

STEPHENTOWN -- 26-year-old Christopher Stevens was charged with animal neglect after an investigation by New York State Police, who said that they were contacted by concerned citizens about horses on Stevens' property.
Police said that horses were reported to be underfed, and that their investigation showed the four horses lost a considerable amount of weight over the past several months.  Stevens agreed to donate his two thinnest horses to Little Brook Farm on September 25 so they could receive immediate care.
State Police said they executed a search warrant at the property based on the condition of the remaining horses and the unsanitary conditions of the property.  They said they recovered a shotgun that Stevens is prohibited to possess by law.
The horses were examined by a veterinarian and three of them were determined to be emaciated, and two also showed signs of respiratory infection, dermatitis, and excessive hair loss.
Stevens was charged with three counts of Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance and 4th Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon.  He was arraigned and released to probation.
