Layoffs at GE Plant in Schenectady

SCHENECTADY - What are considered to be 200 "white collar" General Electric jobs will no longer be around in Schenectady ,by the end of the year, said a spokesman for the company Wednesday.

The nearly 200 jobs will be eliminated from the Power and Water Plant, at the GE campus, as part of a restructuring process the spokesman confirmed. The layoffs will not affect hourly union employees.

The announcement comes on the heels of the company threatening to move their Fort Edward facility to Florida. Roughly 198 employees at the Washington County plant would be affected by the move.

The company spokesman said Wednesday despite the layoff notices the company has invested $400 million dollars and hired 1,600 new workers, all in the Capital Region, since 2011.
