GE formally announces decision to close Ft. Edward facility

FORT EDWARD -- General Electric issued a formal announcement on Thursday that they would be closing a Fort Edward manufacturing facility.

GE Energy Management says they informed employees of the decision to move manufacturing operations to a facility in Clearwater, Florida. They say the Fort Edward closure will happen no sooner than September 2014.

In the statement, released by GE, they say the Fort Edward site has been losing money for several years. The decision to close the facility was made after considering a proposal from the union. However, they say, "the proposal submitted by the union fell well short of the savings and efficiencies that would be generated by the proposed move."

The union responded to the announcement in a release, saying despite the union's best efforts, "it was clear that GE never intended to seriously negotiate over saving the Ft. Edward plant."
