Mother behind bars for tampering with child's medication

POWNAL, Vt. -- A mother is behind bars after authorities say she altered her childs medication.

Kristy Prouty was charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault, cruelty to a child under 10 and prescription fraud. Officials say Prouty told the Bennigton Police in August that the childs step-mother had altered medication prescribed to treat ADD/ADHD.

In October, the Vermont State Police were notified by the childs school that the same medication had been tampered with. The prescription is normally left at the school and administered by a school nurse. The nurse discovered, after one dose had been administered, that six pills appeared to be missing and the remaining pills appeared to have been tampered with.

Further investigation by authorities revealed that the medication had been replaced with powdered sugar and Prozac. Officials believe Prouty broke open the capsules, emptied out the contents, and replaced them with the sugar and mood-stabilizer.

Prouty is due in court on Thursday on the charges.
