Forum held to discuss Schenectady school concerns
SCHENECTADY -- More than 150 people attended a forum
Wednesday night to discuss concerns with Schenectady School District. Several
parents said their children were bullied at Mont Pleasant Middle School,
including Vicki Salvo, whose daughter was beaten up by an alleged fight club.
I'm hoping they really take notice of the problem. It seems like they know it existed, but they dont seem to be doing enough about it. I think they could do more, said Salvo, who asked for metal detectors, hall monitors and a ban on cell phones with cameras.
The district said it cant afford to spend more on security because it is already struggling with finances. Earlier this month Superintendent Larry Spring announced the district would file a civil rights suit against the state for more funding, although it is working to install an interior surveillance system at Mont Pleasant.
These are not things that I havent heard before. Several of these parents are parents that Ive met with before. These are the battles that we fight in the district on a daily basis, said Spring.
Some community members suggested parenting classes for parents with children who violate the code of conduct. Others supported a guide for low-cost after school activities.
