NY legislators oppose commission subpoenas

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- New York lawmakers say they'll file court papers intended to block the state's new corruption commission's subpoenas for information about their clients and outside income.

Spokesmen for the Assembly's Democratic majority and Senate's majority coalition of mostly Republicans say the filings are expected Friday in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

They say the commission is breaching the constitutionally guaranteed separation of powers by demanding the information. Its members are ppointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption says it hasn't subpoenaed information from the Senate and Assembly but from law firms and businesses where legislators also work.

Cuomo announced the commission in July. Schneiderman deputized its members, meant to give them authority to investigate any branch of state government.
