Dog found in NY gas station dumpster

WEST ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) -- A 1-year-old dog has been rescued from a commercial dumpster in a New York suburb.

The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the small pooch was discovered in the trash at a gas station in West at about 1 a.m. Tuesday. Officials believe the dog, a Lhasa Apso breed, chewed its way out of a plastic bag.

The female pup was wearing a pink leash and a pink collar. The dog was transported to a 24-hour animal hospital.

Officials say the animal was severely matted and dirty but otherwise in good health. A gas station surveillance video taken nearly 24 hours before the dog was found shows a person carrying a plastic bag that appears to contain a box and placing it in the dumpster.
