Vt. state police cite man hauling $44,000 in booze

PUTNEY, Vt. (AP) -- Vermont police have issued a citation to a man they say was transporting $44,000 worth of liquor he'd bought in New Hampshire to New York.

Police say a Vermont state trooper stopped 34-year-old Andy Chan of Flushing, N.Y. on Interstate 91 in Putney Saturday night for a traffic violation.

During the stop, the trooper discovered numerous cases of liquor in Chan's van.

Police say Chan bought more than $44,000 worth of liquor in New Hampshire and was driving it to New York. He was charged with violating state liquor transportation laws and ordered to report to appear in court Feb. 18.

Liquor sales in New Hampshire are not taxed and prices can be significantly lower than in neighboring states.

Police did not say whether they seized the alcohol.
