SCAM ALERT: Man impersonating officer attempting to get money

WASHINGTON COUNTY - The Washington County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a scam where a man claiming to be an officer is demanding money cards.

Officials say a man claiming to be LT. Fred Barns with a badge number of 794 is calling residents and telling them they missed a jury duty date. That man then demands that person to go to a specified location and purchase two $500 money cards.

He also has asked for cell phone numbers and to stay on the line until the purchase is made.  Anyone that refused, the person claiming to be an officer became very belligerent and threatens to arrest them.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office say that they have received 7 reports of this scam.

Officials stress they have no one employed by that name, and urge residents to call police and to not give money to this person.
