Mourners Remember NYS Trooper Cunniff

Hundreds of people - family, friends, colleagues and strangers - came to the Grace Fellowship Church in Latham Thursday afternoon and evening for the wake of David Cunniff, a 35-year-old New York State Trooper who was killed in a crash Monday on the thruway in Amsterdam.

"Just down to earth and a good family man," said Ward Fellows, who knew him well. "Loved to laugh, happy-go-lucky."

Cunniff had pulled over a driver and issued a ticket. A tractor-trailer driven by a 65-year old man from Canada slammed into Cunniff's police car and the car he had stopped. The other driver survived. Cunniff died the next day. The truck driver was not injured and is still in the area while police investigate.

"Just a very, very rare, beautiful person, just a good guy," was part of Albert Dorpfeld's tribute. "Those guys have a tough job out there and as far as I'm concerned, the state police family ought to be very, very proud of this man because he represented them well."
