Small dog on icy river keeps Cohoes crews busy

UPDATE: Authorities say the dog died after falling through the ice. Officials received a call on Thursday morning that the dog was back on the ice. Rescueres were able to get close to the dog, but unfortunately could not secure it.

COHOES - Cohoes Fire Department responded to a call of a small dog running on the ice Wednesday

The call came in saying the small dog was on the ice off of Admirals Walk, located on Van Schaick Island.

The Fire Chief tells CBS6 the ice was thick enough for a dog to run out on, however too thin for the safety of the crew.   Residents in the area say the dog had been running back and forth across the ice all day on Wednesday.

Mayor George Primeau says Animal Control has been dispatched to feed the small dog to coax it off the ice safely.

There is no word on who owns the dog.
