One dead after fire in Greenwich destroys one building, damages others
UPDATE: Police have identified the victim in Sunday's fire as Paul Parker, Sr., 77.
GREENWICH - A fire in Greenwich killed one man, destroyed the building he lived in and damaged two adjacent buildings early Sunday evening. Around 5:15 p.m. firefighters went to work at 56 Salem Street.
While firefighters were working on the smouldering building at 8:30, people related to the man who died waited on the other side of the street. One man told CBS6 News his father died in the fire. He shared no other information about his father.
According to Heather Gardephe, the second floor had been occupied by her aunt and two cousins, along with her aunt's granddaughter. Gardephe says they were not home when the fire began and are now staying with family.
Gardephe said the elderly man who lived downstairs was a smoker and used an oxygen tank. Two other people familiar with the fire suggested to CBS6 reporter Craig the oxygen tank and smoking were factors in the fire. Fire investigators had not given the cause.
