Cape Cod towns spending millions for snow removal

HYANISS, Mass. (AP) -- With 10 weeks remaining to winter, town snow removal budgets are already under pressure.

The Cape Cod Times reports that municipalities on Cape Cod have spent $4.8 million.

Bills from the New Year's storm are still coming in, but early calculations show it was costly. Barnstable says last week's storm cost about $425,000, or about 70 percent of the annual snow budget.

Wellfleet has spent two-thirds of its $93,000 snow budget for the year. In Orleans, three-quarters of its $104,442 budget has been used.

As much as 16 inches of snow has been dumped on the Cape and Islands. The snow was followed by a thaw, then extremely cold temperatures that froze the melting snow.

That cycle was costly in salt and sand used to keep the streets from becoming hazardous.
