NY gov's education plan expands technology, pre-K

BUFFALO (AP) -- The next steps in what Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls an "education reinvention" include upgrading classroom technology and making pre-kindergarten universal.

Parent and teacher groups don't argue with those ideas but say they're disappointed that Cuomo, in rolling out his 2014 agenda Wednesday, didn't address difficulties lingering around reforms already underway -- including a shift to more challenging learning standards and assessments.

New York State United Teachers President Richard Iannuzzi says Cuomo ignored "the elephant in the room" during his State of the State -- the need for a course correction in implementation of the Common Core standards to ease the stress on schools.

Critics say the state's quick linking of high-stakes testing to the new standards is unfair to students and their teachers.
