New plan for Lake George boats

LAKE GEORGE -- There is a new plan in place to keep Lake George free from invasive species that will have an impact on anyone who wants to put a boat in the lake.

With the lake facing an onslaught of everything from spiny water fleas to Asian clams, the Lake George Park Commission has ordered all boats arriving by trailer to be inspected for any plant or animal material. Those that do not pass the inspection must be cleaned at a nearby boat washing station.

Despite earlier worries that the cost of the new plan would be passed on to lake users through new fees or taxes, officials say the inspections and washing will be free. The $700,000 cost to hire necessary workers is being picked up the the state and local groups.
