Schenectady Fire Chief retires

SCHENECTADY -- After decades of service, Thursday was the final day at work for retiring Schenectady Fire Chief Michael Della Rocco.

An official walking out ceremony that included Mayor Gary McCarthy as well as current and former members of his department took place on Thursday morning. Della Rocco became Chief nearly 3 years ago, after having served in the department since 1975.

The retiring Chief took the opportunity to share a final farewell and offered up some advice to the men and women he worked with over the years. "Respect yourself," he said, "respect each other, respect your officers, and above all, respect the job."

A replacement has not been named for the now-vacant job.
