SCAM ALERT: water department impersonators enter elderly couple's home

COLONIE Colonie Police are warning residents about a scam that is being investigated by police.

Police say on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. two people knocked on the door of an elderly couples Boght Road home, claiming to be from the water department.

Once inside, police say the men divided the residents by sending one in the basement to locate the meter with one suspect and the other was sent to an upstairs bathroom.

The other suspect is believed to have moved about the upstairs.

The two men also asked for change for a $100.00; however the couple did not have change.

Police say nothing was stolen, but believe there was intent to distract the residents to find valuables and money.

They left in a dark color SUV or van with windows on the side.

Police stress that Latham Water Department employees drive a clearly marked vehicle that is white with blue stripes with the Town of Colonie Seal on the side.

All Latham Water Department employees will also have an official Town of Colonie Identification Card.
