NY man accused of aiming laser at helicopter
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a man at a New York fireworks display aimed a laser beam at a police helicopter, endangering thousands of people below.
Philip Putter of Hawthorne was charged Thursday with violating a new federal law against targeting aircraft with lasers.
However, the U.S. attorney's office agreed to dismiss the complaint if Putter stays out of trouble for six months.
A call to his lawyer was not immediately returned.
The complaint says the crew of a Westchester County police helicopter radioed July 3 that they were being hit in the eyes by the laser beam. They were flying over a fireworks display at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla, with at least 10,000 people watching.
The complaint says officers on the ground saw the beam and followed it down to Putter.
