Albany blight is the topic of plan vote

ALBANY -- The Albany County Legislature approved a resolution Monday evening to establish a land bank corporation in the county. The not-for-profit would acquire properties that are tax delinquent, foreclosed, vacant or abandoned in an effort to remove blight.

They would bring some relief to what we have seen for many, many years and has affected not only the neighborhood, but our education system so on and so forth, said Legislature Majority Leader Frank Commisso.

Some minority members spoke against the way the resolution was brought forward by criticizing the rapid process used to bring it to a vote.

Only ten land banks are permitted statewide and eight have already been established. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is expected to propose allowing 20 land banks, but the majority did not want to wait.

Ultimately it's going to be kicked back to us, predicted Minority Whip Deb Busch. I think that the community's concerned not having input it would really behoove this legislature to bring it back to committee. It would not have hurt.
