Astronaut visits local high school

LATHAM -- Some area students got an out-of-this-world visitor on Tuesday.

NASA astronaut, Dr. Jeanette Epps was at Shaker High School to encourage the physics and engineering students to reach for the stars. Epps is scheduled to travel to the International Space Station later this year, where she will stay for several months.

Dr. Epps told the students about her own training program and talked about the future of human space exploration now that the space shuttle has been retired. "We want to regain a lot of people," she said. "There used to be a lot of interest; we want to get more people into space exploration."

Dr. Epps also shared with the students how their physics classes will help them both professionally and personally in the years ahead.
