Elderly man found suffering from hypothermia

SUMMIT -- Police say an elderly man was discovered in a Summit home suffering from hypothermia.

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the Schoharie County Sheriff's Office received a report from a concerned citizen about a residence of Mud Lake Road who was potentially in need of assistance. When the Sheriff's Office, Richmondville Fire Department, and the Summit Rescue Squad arrived on the scene, they found the house was blocked by snow, with no indication that anyone had been in or around the house for several days.

When they entered the home, they found a 76-year-old man in serious need of medical care. They say he was suffering from hypothermia, frost bite and dehydration. Officials say there was no heat in the home.

The man was taken to Cobleskill Regional Hospital in serious condition.

The Sheriff's Office is reminding the public during cold weather to check in on elderly neighbors or call authorities if they are unable to do so themselves.
