Brockton woman charged with beating son in store
BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) -- A Brockton woman is heading to court, charged with repeatedly hitting her 5-year-old son inside a supermarket in front of other shoppers.
Marie Lyssa Mars is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on charges including assault and battery for allegedly striking the boy in a Shaw's on Saturday afternoon.
Police say the 42-year-old Mars struck the boy several times, and customers asked her to stop.
Other shoppers followed her to her car, got the plate number and called police.
She was pulled over while driving home and arrested.
Mars told police her son was "very active" and she was "just disciplining him."
Police say Mars was caught on store surveillance video.
Witness Lorna Green-Baker tells The Enterprise the boy started crying and cowering. She called it "horrid."
