Former company treasurer charged with stealing from fire company

EAST DURHAM - The former treasurer for a volunteer fire department is facing charges after an investigation alleges he stole a large sum of money.

Police arrested 68 year-old James Martin after an investigation revealed over 40,000 was stolen from various fundraiser events and two bank accounts managed by the East Durham Volunteer Fire Company, in Greene County.

Martin is charged with two counts of grand larceny, offering a false instrument, and falsifying business records.

Investigators say Martin also filed false information to the IRS, and falsifying business records.

Martin was arraigned and sent to the Green County Jail on 10,000 bail.
