Cohoes man charged with assault after baby's ribs broken
COHOES -- A father was
arrested Friday for allegedly breaking several of his infant sons ribs. Police
said Christopher Barnes, Sr, 26, broke nine ribs when he became frustrated his seven-month-old
son Chris, Jr. wouldnt stop crying and squeezed him.
The boys mother, Kayla Perry, said her son has a bone disorder that makes his bones brittle.
He was born around 26 weeks. He was born dead. He was revived he also had two ribs fracture when he was born. We think he has osteopenia, but nobody is checking for it and that's a brittle bone disorder, said Perry.
Perry said after months in the hospital, Chris was finally allowed to come home where he and Barnes became inseparable.
He's a daddy's boy. He and his dad do everything together, said Perry. Chris is actually the best man I've ever been with. He hardly ever yells, he don't get aggravated like that.
As a premature baby, Chris routinely had doctors visits. Perry said during a routine visit last week, the doctor noticed Chris had lost a few ounces and recommended the family go to the hospital.
They [the hospital] were
like we're going to keep him for a couple days, get his weight up and then next
thing you know theyre telling us baby's got nine rib fractures and he's being
taken from you, said Perry.
Police said Chris was taken to Albany Medical Center where he is recovering. Barnes was remanded to Albany County Jail on $25,000 bond. The family said the case will go to a grand jury Wednesday afternoon.
I know he's crying about it a lot in there. I know he's feeling really bad in there he's like I didn't do it and I'm like I know you didn't do it. I've been doing everything I can to try and prove you didn't do this to our baby, said Perry. I cant even cry right now because I know that we're right and the truth will come out.
