17 NY nursing home workers fired, face charges

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- The Buffalo area's largest health care organization has fired 17 nursing home employees who face criminal charges from state officials alleging patient neglect.

Officials with Kaleida Health tell local media they've been cooperating with the state Attorney General Office's investigation into mistreatment of a patient at HighPointe, a care facility located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Authorities say the specific charges won't be made public until court files are unsealed when the suspects are arraigned Friday afternoon in Buffalo City Court.

A Kaleida spokesman says the workers were fired when the company was made aware of the situation.

Officials with Communication Workers of America Local 1168 say six of the accused are members of the union.
