Site of North Adams emergency center unclear

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (AP) -- Officials at Pittsfield's Berkshire Medical Center say they are committed to opening a satellite emergency room in North Adams even if it's not at the site of the now-closed North Adams Regional Hospital.

An attorney for the Pittsfield hospital said at a bankruptcy hearing Monday in Springfield that Berkshire Medical Center is considering other sites for an emergency center.

The bankruptcy hearing was for the parent company of the North Adams hospital, which shut down abruptly last month, putting more than 500 people out of work and leaving residents wondering about the availability of health care in the area.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that the Pittsfield hospital's lawyer told the judge that opening an emergency center at the NARH site may be too expensive.
