Police: Massachusetts food pantry wasn't robbed

WEBSTER, Mass. (AP) -- Police now say the food found missing from a central Massachusetts food pantry wasn't stolen, just given away without being restocked.

Volunteers arrived at the Webster/Dudley Foodshare in the basement of United Church of Christ in Webster on Thursday morning and found the shelves nearly bare. Some donated toys left over from Christmas and baby clothes were also gone. The workers called police, and new donations began pouring in.

Police Chief Timothy Bent said officers discovered it was all a misunderstanding. Bent tells the Telegram & Gazette a worker who was rushed helping people on Tuesday had not restocked the shelves as usual.

Bent said he's glad it turned out well.

Director Donna Farrow said she was touched by the generosity of people who stopped by to help restock the pantry.

WEBSTER, Mass. (AP) -- Volunteers at a central Massachusetts food pantry say thieves cleaned the facility out, emptying shelves and taking boxes of food prepared for needy families.

Workers arrived at the Webster/Dudley Foodshare in the basement of United Church of Christ in Webster on Thursday morning and found the shelves nearly bare. Some donated toys left over from Christmas and baby clothes were also stolen.

Director Donna Farrow says if the thieves were hungry, all they had to do was ask for food.

Police say an investigation is underway, but there have been no arrests.

Police think someone may have forgotten to lock the church door, because there was no sign of forced entry.

Meanwhile, Farrow says she's been touched by the generosity of people who topped by to help restock the pantry.
