Jury selected for ex-Senate leader's federal trial
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- A jury has been selected for the second trial of the former Republican leader of the New York Senate federal fraud charges.
Opening statements from prosecution and defense lawyers are scheduled Monday afternoon in Albany, where Joseph Bruno's first trial ended with the former Senate majority leader acquitted of five charges and convicted of two that were overturned on appeal.
Those two refiled charges against the 85-year-old Rensselaer County resident focus on about $400,000 prosecutors say Bruno received from a businessman toward the end of his 13-year stint as one of the state's most powerful elected officials.
Bruno stepped down in 2008, six months before he was indicted.
He tells reporters the prosecution has gone on for years, and it's time to get it behind him.
