Pastor speaks about disturbance in church that ended in death

State Police are waiting for autopsy results, to figure out why an Indian Lake man died, after they said he stormed into a church Saturday armed with a gun.

State Police said that the autopsy was scheduled for Monday. Results have not been released.

Officials said Jason Berg, 44, walked into St. Marys Church in Indian Lake on Saturday during mass.

I rose and said let us pray. That's part of the ritual, said Pastor Philip Allen, from St. Marys Church. And the shout back was, pray for me.

Pastor Allen said he is praying for Berg and his family. He said Bergs family members attend St. Marys Church.

He said after Berg walked in, he moved up the aisle toward the alter, yelling obscenities.

We got to know the scene was not a good one, said Pastor Allen.

Pastor Allen said Berg started sweeping things off of the altar and candle sticks hit two parishioners. When Berg moved closer to him, the Pastor said a 17-year-old altar boy took action.

He had seen the man from earlier and figured he was dangerous and he should act. He tackled him and brought him to the floor, said Pastor Allen. He said other parishioners helped.

State Police said Berg resisted violently, then became unresponsive and was pronounced dead. They said he had a loaded pistol with him, a spare magazine and several rounds of ammunition. They are still investigating and are waiting for an autopsy to tell them how he died.

In the meantime, Pastor Allen said his church is in shock and is sad for Berg's family.

Nice people, good people very sad thing for them, he said.
