Troy man accused in fatal stabbing appears in court

TROY -  A man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend has a history with police.

Alexis Torres faced a Rensselaer County judge Tuesday, led into the courtroom in shackles.  He's charged with the murder of Amber Fernald, who police found stabbed to death inside her apartment last week.

Prosecutors also claim her three children--ages 13, 12, and 5--witnessed the attack.  "Certainly in Rensselaer County, we're going to take it seriously," explained Carmelo Laquidera, the County's 1st Assistant District Attorney.  "Any time there are children involved, it makes it even more troubling."

Torres' trouble with the cops started about a year ago.  Court records show he was slapped with an attempted burglary charge at the same house last June.

More chilling? Amber's own words:  In a 2013 statement to police, Fernald explained her fear of Torres.

The man, who Amber identified as her ex-boyfriend, showed up while she was sleeping, according to the document.  She claims Torres wouldn't let her leave the house and said "he would kill me and then myself if he had to."  Finally, the woman wrote:  "I want Alexis arrested for what he did to me. I am afraid he may hurt or kill me."

Torres faces 25 years to life in prison. He's due back in court in July.
