Saratoga Springs man pleads guilty to hitting, killing pedestrian

SARATOGA COUNTY -- A Saratoga Springs man pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of vehicular manslaughter stemming from the death of an pedestrian last year.

Paul Nicholson II, 29, is expected to be sentenced to two concurrent terms of 3 to 9 years in prison for the June 7, 2013 incident. Nicholson had a blood alcohol level of 0.18 percent when he struck 55-year-old Jamie Jo McBride on Ballston Avenue at about 3:30 that afternoon.

The Saratoga County District Attorney says Nichoson was driving a large Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck on Hamily Street when he made a right turn through the intersection onto Ballston Avenue. A number of witnesses in the heavily-trafficked intersection saw as the truck turned directly into McBride's path, hitting her and throwing her to the ground. Nicholson then continued through the turn, running over McBride.

A school bus that was stopped at the intersection had an on-board security camera that captured the entire incident, though officials say no students were on the bus to witness the tragedy.

Nichols is scheduled to be sentenced in August. In addition to prison time, his expected sentence will include a requirement to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he owns or operates for 3 years following his release from prison.
