Petition circulates to ban plastic bags in Saratoga
SARATOGA SPRINGS Sustainable Saratoga is circulating an online petition to ban distribution of plastic bags at local stores. So far, more than 120 people have signed the petition and Mayor Joanne Yepsen has come out in support.
The group says most bags are not recycled and has created the Bring Your Own Bag project to encourage residents and businesses to use reusable bags.
Several businesses already encourage customers to bring bags by offering discounts or selling reusable bags, but are concerned an all-out ban may be harmful for tourists unaware of the potential law.
When we have the summer traffic coming in we dont see a lot of people bringing in reusable bags because they have their suitcase and that's it, said Maddy Zanetti with Impressions of Saratoga, which offers customers with reusable bags a discount on Tuesdays. I don't think we could go without bags, but if Sustainable Saratoga really promotes it and gets a bag out there that people like carrying around or remember to have with them at all times, I think with the local community you could definitely reduce the amount of bags that are being used.
Sustainable Saratoga hopes to collect 500 signatures and present it to the city council in the Fall.
