Worker dies after car hits landscaping trailer

MOREAU, N.Y. (AP) -- State police say a 71-year-old New York landscaper has died from injuries suffered when a car hit the trailer where he and co-workers sought shelter during a storm.

Troopers say Richard Stearns of Lake Luzerne was part of a crew working Tuesday morning in the Saratoga County town of Moreau, 40 miles north of Albany.

Police say when it began to rain, the crew sought shelter inside their equipment trailer that was partially parked on the road. Troopers say a car slammed into the trailer, injuring Stearns and three other workers.

Stearns died Tuesday evening at Albany Medical Center. The others suffered minor injuries.

Troopers say the 20-year-old driver was trying to retrieve something from his console and didn't see the trailer. He wasn't injured but was ticketed for reckless driving.
