Charges dropped against man accused in Mohawk Commons evacuation

NISKAYUNA -- Charges were dropped against the man arrested early this month after witnesses said he left a package behind that appeared suspicious to shoppers.

Officers arrested Joshua Usher, 21, of Schenectady on charges of First Degree Placing a False Bomb or Hazardous Substance, a Felony, and Disorderly Conduct. But the Assitant District Attorney says the charges have been dismissed after looking at the statute and looking at the facts of the incident. Officials say the laptop-type bag was the only thing set down outside the store, with nothing coming out of the bag.

Police were called to Mohawk Commons on Balltown Road after witnesses saw Usher place what police called a "suspicious looking package" in-between the Target and Famous Footwear stores. Police and fire crews evacuated several stores as a precaution and notified the New York State Police Bomb Squad.
